Moore does. His sound is a slightly contemporized version of what's been going down on the West side for decades, emblazoned with Moore's sparkling rhythmic lead guitar lines and growling vocals. Moore first met the legendary Jimmy Reed in Clarksdale, when he was only eight years old. By the time he was 13 or so, Moore was sharing a bandstand or two with Reed up in Chicago. Letha Jones, widow of piano great Johnny Jones, took an interest in Moore's musical development, spinning stacks of blues wax for the budding guitarist. Moore joined Koko Taylor's Blues Machine in 1975, touring and recording with the Chicago blues queen (on her 1978 LP for Alligator, The Earthshaker). He went out on his own around the turn of the '80s, waxing a fine 1987 album for B.L.U.E.S. RB, Hard Times, that impressively spotlighted his versatility. After some rough spots, Moore is now more visible than ever on the Chicago circuit, with two new albums (one for Austrian Wolf, the other, Live at Blue Chicago, for Delmark). In addition to playing as a leader, Moore is likely to turn up on local stages as a sideman behind everyone from Mary Lane and Karen Carroll to rock-solid bassist Willie Kent. If Johnny B. Moore isn't a star in the making, there's no justice in the blues world. Performance Credits- Johnny B. Primer falls somewhere between the two, turning out tough Chicago blues fueled by his biting slide guitar. His original songs aren't particularly interesting, but they function as good vehicles for exciting jams. In the end, Primer might not add anything new to Chicago blues, but he has a great time playing, and it sure is fun to listen to him play. Born Jessie Lee Frealls on June 11, 1931, in Bunkie, LA, Lee grew up in Beaumont, TX, where she studied piano and sang in her church's choir. Gospel singer Lillian Ginn was sufficiently impressed to extend an invitation to join her on tour, but Lee's mother refused to grant her permission. As a teen Lee nevertheless toured the South as a member of the Famous Georgia Minstrels, befriending blues legends Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Big Mama Thornton along the way. She relocated to Chicago in 1958, hitching a ride with a delivery van driver and settling at the West Side apartment of an aunt. After toiling in anonymity as a singer and dancer, in 1960 Lee signed to J. Mayo Williams' Ebony label to cut her debut single, "Sad and Evil Woman," credited at Williams' insistence to Bonnie "Bombshell" Lane, a moniker she reportedly despised. The single fared poorly, and Lee continued touring the Chicago jazz and blues club circuit, developing a potent voice as earthy as it was electrifying. Family obligations forced her to retire from music during the middle of the decade, but in 1967 she resurfaced alongside the legendary pianist Sunnyland Slim, a longtime confederate of Muddy Waters. Lee regularly opened for Slim in the years that followed, becoming a legend on the North Side blues circuit via residencies at clubs including Wise Fools, B.L.U.E.S., and Blue Chicago. In the late '70s, she also cut a handful of singles for Slim's own Airway label. Lee also enjoyed a decade-long collaboration with renowned bassist Willie Kent, during which time she recorded the 1995 Delmark LP Sweetheart of the Blues as well as the 1998 Wolf Records set I'm Good. In addition, she contributed to myriad compilations, most notably Women of Blue Chicago and Chicago's Finest Blues Ladies. Health problems nevertheless plagued Lee throughout the latter half of her life, and she died September 7, 2006, at the age of 75. The bulk of this disc emanates from a 1986 session held at the radio station WRDE, catching the combo raw and wild on nice readings of "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," "Bad Avenue," "Gambler," and "Ain't That Nice." These tracks are simply loaded with stinging guitar from Slim and John Primer and it's Primer contributing the lead vocals on "Think" and "She Moves Me." A hot session that's pretty representative of their down-home sound. Born Charles W. Thompson on March 2, 1925 in Tippo, Mississippi, he learned to play guitar from Hooker while still a teenager, developing an insistent single-chord technique similar to that of his mentor. Davis and Hooker regularly gigged together in Detroit throughout the 1940s, with the former settling in Chicago early the next decade. There he became a fixture of the West Side's Maxwell Street marketplace area, performing his distinctive brand of traditional Mississippi blues amidst the daily hustle-and-bustle of local merchants and shoppers. In the wake of the folk-blues revival of the early '60s, he recorded the LP Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis for Elektra, and although a fine showcase for his powerful guitar skills and provocative vocals, it failed to make much impact outside of purist circles. Davis continued to record sporadically in the decades that followed, and remained a constant West Side presence prior to his death on December 28, 1995 Credits: Hannes Folterbauer Photography, Producer Jimmy Davis Guitar, Vocals, Main Performer Michael Frank Photography, Producer Paul Smith Engineer Jimmie Davis Guitar, Vocals, Main Performer Alex Munkas Mixing Lester Davenport Harp Jay Shilliday Engineer Paul Andrew Smith Engineer Daniel Gugolz Liner Notes Andrea Folterbauer Layout Assistance, Layout Design Kansas City Red Drums Timothy Taylor Drums Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis Main Performer Songlist: 01 - Men's A Fool 02 - Two Trains Running 03 - Dry In The Dark 04 - I've Been A Fool A Long Time 05 - That's All Right 06 - In Your Bedroom 07 - One-Eyed Woman 08 - Going Upstairs 09 - Jimmy Davis Blues 10 - Big Leg Woman 11 - Dust My Broom Type: mp3 at 256 kb/s Download ( 77.8 mb): Code: http://rapidshare.com/files/50273709/cbs11pmw.rar Chicago Blues Session Vol 12 - John Brim & Pinetop Perkins ![]() Info: This album features 4 songs by Brim and 5 from Perkins from two different 1989 sessions, plus a couple of late 70's tracks from the Brim family. Brim made some wonderful recordings for various labels in the 50s but at the time of these recordings his voice was pretty shot and he sound very different to the man who recorded 30 years previously. Band accompaniments with guitarist John Primer and harmonica player Billy Branch are solid. The 5 Perkins cuts feature him accompanied by the drums of Timothy Taylor or Michael Strasse. Nice performances of mostly familiar songs like High Heel Sneakers and Drivin' Wheel.
