The label s catalogue, spanning some 36 years-plus, remains a huge presence in the reggae world, pored over by collectors, envied by rivals and retaining a massive influence over the history of the music. Some of its compilations, like the Tighten Up and Reggae Chartbusters series, became the vehicle by which most of reggae s casual buyers heard their music. While it had rivals, such as the Pama group, Island, and Virgin, it saw them all off within its own market, despite a few financial setbacks during the 1970s. For many people, Trojan was indeed is reggae, much as an earlier era saw the Blue Beat label as a byword for ska. This compilation tells the Trojan story from its earliest release (1967 s Judge Sympathy ) to its final faltering attempts to get to grips with dancehall music in the mid-1980s.
