The Roches - (An Almost Complete) DiscographyCategory: audio Size: 0 Kb Rating: 0 Source: http://rapidfind.org/upload/showthread.php?t=145126 Cache: The Roches - (An Almost Complete) Discography From allmusic: Noted for their lush harmonies, quirky songs, and impressive stylistic range, the three Roche sisters -- Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy -- were among contemporary folk music's most endearing artists. The Roches began singing together while growing up in New York during the late '50s and early '60s, taking to the streets of the city each holiday season to regale passersby with Christmas carols. At the end of the decade both Maggie (the oldest) and Terre (the middle daughter) quit school to begin touring professionally as a duo. In 1970 they met Paul Simon, who tapped them to sing backup on his There Goes Rhymin' Simon album. He also helped get them a contract with Columbia; their debut LP, Seductive Reasoning, followed in 1975, but went largely unnoticed. For a time, the Roches considered quitting the music business, even leaving New York to retreat to Louisiana; eventually they returned north, at which time Suzzy left college to join the group full-time. Restored to a trio, the Roches became a staple of the Greenwich Village folk circuit and a favorite of local critics. In 1979, they signed to Warner Bros. to issue a self-titled LP produced by Robert Fripp, earning acclaim for their exquisite harmonies (equal parts Terre's ethereal upper register, Maggie's near-baritone low notes, and Suzzy's midrange acrobatics). While the track "The Married Men" later scored a successful cover by Phoebe Snow, The Roches itself was not a hit. For 1980's Nurds, they changed direction, augmenting their basic folk sound with a rock rhythm section comprised of former Television bassist Fred Smith and Patti Smith Group drummer Jay Dee Daugherty. Fripp returned to produce 1982's Keep on Doing, a largely acoustic effort featuring cameos from members of his band King Crimson. When neither it nor its follow-up, 1985's Another World, was a commercial success, the trio left Warner to return to touring. The Roches finally resurfaced on record in 1989, issuing Speak on MCA to the usual press acclaim and negligible sales. Their next effort, 1990's We Three Kings, was a Christmas album fondly recalling the sisters' roots. After 1992's A Dove, the trio left MCA to record a children's album, Will You Be My Friend?, issued on the tiny Baby Boom label in 1994. Continuing to cater to the younger set, that same year they recorded the soundtrack to the animated feature The Land Before Time II. For 1995's Can We Go Home Now, they signed to Rykodisc; another Roche sibling -- brother David -- was on hand to lend backing vocals. In early 1997, the Roches announced they were, at least temporarily, going their separate ways. While Maggie remained quiet, Terre soon formed a new group, Terre Roche & Her Moodswings, and later that same year Suzzy issued her first solo LP, Holy Smokes. In 2003 Rhino/Warner Bros released the Collected Works of the Roches compilation, prompting the trio to re-form after an 11-year hiatus for 2007's excellent Moonswept. I'll just add this: While The Roches are best seen live--their shows are a joy, and they are seriously, out-of-left-field *funny*--their albums can be a bit hit and miss (the three I don't have uploaded are a good example of that!). But each album has at least a couple of gems, and they really have some of the most gorgeous harmonies you'll ever hear. NB: This is an almost complete--and I do mean complete!--discography of The Roches's catalog, with three main exceptions: * Nurds (1980) * Another World (1985) * No Trespassing [EP] So if you have any of these (along with Phoebe Snow's cover of "The Married Men"), I'd be a *very* happy camper if you'd post them. I have the three albums on vinyl, but again, no way to convert them to mp3. Maggie & Terre Roche - Seductive Reasoning (1975) ![]() From allmusic: When young Maggie Roche introduced herself to Paul Simon, it is easy to see what attracted him to her songs and the act she had with her sister, Terre. Roche has an intelligent, individual songwriting style, and her songs serve as the vehicle for two-part harmonies with Terre, the soprano, and herself on alto, a sort of distaff version of Simon & Garfunkel. Simon was sufficiently interested to use the two on There Goes Rhymin' Simon. Musically, Seductive Reasoning is a counterpart to that record, boasting many of the same names among its credits. Like Rhymin' Simon, it was recorded largely at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section giving the tracks their distinctive hybrid sound of country, rock, folk, gospel, and blues. And just as Simon turned to former Yardbird Paul Samwell-Smith for help on the quieter "American Tune," three ballads -- "West Virginia," "Malachy's," and "Jill of All Trades" -- were handled by him. But the superior musicianship and production are not what make Seductive Reasoning an outstanding album. Rather, it is most notable as the auspicious debut of a remarkable songwriter. Roche has the perspective of a young woman thoughtfully, if confusedly, making her way through the romantic, sexual, and career thickets of early adulthood. Her gift for wordplay expresses her uncertainties well. "There ought to be something to fall back on," she writes in "Down the Dream," "like a knife or a career." And her sense of romantic exploration is equally wary of the pitfalls, as she reveals in "Underneath the Moon": "A woman is like a puzzle/Shackin' up with the clues/While every piece she get/Is another piece she lose." The sisters trade off vocals and harmonize beautifully, adding to the songs' effectiveness and making Seductive Reasoning extraordinarily impressive. TRACKS: 01. Underneath The Moon 02. The first may have been prettier by conventional folk-music standards, but Keep On Doing is more ambitious, emphasizing some peculiar instrumentation especially the coolly excited, pulsing guitar runs by Robert Fripp that often gives it the feel of rock, although the record is lush with acoustic guitars. Features their accapella arrangement of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus -- for three voices. Yes, it *is* that good. TRACKS 01. The Hallelujah Chorus 02. Losing True 03. Steady with the Maestro 04. All of the ingredients for a huge album are here: emotional yet accessible songs, radio-friendly folk-pop arrangements, and the sisters' usual mind-blowing vocal pyrotechnics. True, the title cut does have harmonies and cadences that are more typical of Bulgarian music, but much of the rest of this album is radio-ready. "Big Nuthin" and "Person With a Past" are two obvious hits, but there are plenty more; in fact, this album doesn't have a dud track from end to end. Sure, fans of their early work will find "I Love My Mom" a bit too conventional and poppy, but heck, if you can't get a bit schmaltzy on a song to your mom, something's wrong with the world. Those who love the Roches' trademark bizarre wordplay and telepathic harmonies can focus on the avant-garde a cappella of "The Anti-Sex Backlash of the 80s" -- and with a title like that how can you resist? The jazzy backups are well handled and subtle throughout the album, and it's a classic. Alas, like all Roches albums it was critically acclaimed but ignored by the public. TRACKS 01. Speak 02. But it has occurred to us during the making of this record that Christmas music certainly goes way back into our early childhood memories. In fact, we can't even remember when we learned some of these arragements. THE ROCHES came into being one Christmas season on the streets of New York City singing these very songs. And every year when the hassles and tensions of Christmas set in, we rediscover the joyful, peaceful spirit of Christmas through these carols. This record is a dream come true for us. We send it out into the world with best wishes for everyone! I'll add: this is my absolute favorite "Christmas" album (along with Emmylou Harris' "The Light in the Stable"). Highly recommended! Here their pop style hasn't changed that much--it's a little more eclectic, if anything. But it could almost be growing out of their three consanguineous voices; they sound as natural and gorgeous as the Comedian Harmonists, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, maybe even the Judds. So when the words don't kick in right off, just immerse in the sound until they do, because they will. Pained smiles replace nervous giggles not because they've lost their sense of humor, but because Suzzy has finally gotten sick of her own whimsy, because the '90s are even less fun than the '80s, because you can't live with them and you can't live without them, and because they thought following "You're the One" with "You're the Two" was feminist comedy enow. Will You Be My Friend? is packed with melodic and inventive ditties that touch on meaningful subjects ranging from doing the laundry and facing disappointment to befriending the friendless (told as a story about a toad and turtles). The downright playful tune "Uncle Dave" sounds like an early American folk song plunked out by a fledgling kids' band (when was the last time you heard a couplet that rhymed "Brooklyn" with "good lookin'"!?!). The real prize here, among the many gems, is "Greetings," an imaginative look at our solar system told from the viewpoint of someone living on Mercury (which makes us the "aliens"). The vocals are the star on Moonswept. Individually, each of them sing beautifully, but it s when they join together that the listener s heart starts to pound excitedly. Unfortunately, the Roches wrote most of the 14 tracks here, and they are not very good. The songs are often cloying and offer less than insightful comments on aging, human relationships and other such granola fodder. However, there are three excellent tunes written by others. Long Before , by Suzzy s daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche, suggests how ephemeral and important friendships can be. The Roches also cover two Paranoid Larry songs, No Shoes and Jesus Shaves , which contain lots of clever wordplay and provide the three singers with lots of opportunities to engage in demanding stop and start tempos and sing gloriously overtop of each other s voices. I'll just add this - the strength of any particular album by The Roches seems to depend on Maggie's songwriting. When she is on top of her songwriting game, the albums shine. And when she isn't--or, like here, not really present in a writerly capacity--then it's more hit or miss. But you can't go wrong with those voices and the marvelous sound they produce. TRACKS 01.
