Barrington Levy

Quote:

Barrington Levy is a living legend in reggae circles...
Jamaica's #1 singer of all time, Barrington Levy is a driving force in reggae music and remains the perennial favourite of audiences in Jamaica - and throughout the world.
Always a solid voice and a uniquely expressive song style, Barrington is consistently at the forefront of the music scene, and has become the most requested vocalist in reggae music history.
This is Crucial Reggae (2004)

Quote:

Though the arrival of Barrington Levy as a force on the Jamaican music scene in the early 1980s slightly predated the advent of dancehall-style reggae, the singer was quick to adopt the new rhythms as his own. Hits such as "Here I Come," with its insistent, herky-jerky rhythm, and "Under Mi Sensi," which spawned a host of soundalikes, quickly followed. Levy's popularity has endured over the years, and his versatility is made apparent on this volume of the CRUCIAL REGGAE series. The disc spans a slice of the singer's '80s output, from the early, career-making hits "Mary Long Tongue," with its classic Sly and Robbie rhythm, and "Prison Oval Rock," where Levy's trademark wail is displayed to its best advantage against a cool, spare production, to the Bounty Killer-accompanied dancehall pop of "Living Dangerously" and the brooding, low-key classic reggae of "Hypocrites."

King Tubby

Quote:

King Tubby (born Osbourne Ruddock, January 28, 1941 February 6, 1989) was a Jamaican electronics and sound engineer, known primarily for his influence on the development of dub in the 1960s and 1970s. Tubby's innovative studio work, which saw him elevate the role of record producer to a creative height previously only reserved for composers and musicians, would prove to be highly influential across many genres of popular music. He is often cited as the inventor of the concept of the remix, and so may be seen as a direct antecedent of much dance and electronic music production.

Madlib
Blunted in the Bombshelter (2002) a great mixtape of old reggae

Quote:

Blunted in the Bomb Shelter is one of the many projects that Madlib has undertaken rather successfully. This is a mix CD that skanks and trips through the Trojan back catalogue. There are 45 tracks that make up the 64 minutes of this CD. Madlib claims that this mix was recorded in his basement bomb shelter, and who are we to disbelieve him? There are some lovely tracks on here with a nice variety of styles covered. Artists include Zap Pow, The Vulcans, Trinity, David Issacs, Don Drummond, Price Far I, King Tubby, The Chosen Few, and Mikey Dread. Like all decent DJs/producers, Madlib has a good ear for hooks and picks the best section of each track.
