Danzig - DiscographyCategory: audio Size: 0 Kb Rating: 0 Source: http://thephoenix-forums.com/showthread.php?t=25799 Cache: Danzig - Discography 1988 - Danzig ![]() Danzig is the 1988 debut album of the eponymous band led by Glenn Danzig, formerly the songwriter and vocalist of The Misfits and Samhain. The album was also the first release on producer Rick Rubin's new label Def American Recordings. Def American's successor, American Recordings reissued the album in the USA and UK in 1998. It was recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios and Chung King Metal, and mixed at Smoke Tree and Village. The song "Mother" became a hit on radio and MTV in 1993-94 after its inclusion on Thrall: Demonsweatlive, and was later included on various hard-rock/heavy metal/alternative music compilations, including the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Guitar Hero II (to which a final solo was added, in this case) and True Crime: New York City. It is the band's biggest-selling album (Thrall: Demonsweatlive reached platinum status but is not a full album) and was certified Gold in the U.S. in 1994. While 1990-1998 pressings had the Parental Advisory label in the form of a sticker on the cellophane wrap, post-1998 pressings have the label printed on the artwork. It is considered one of few albums labeled as explicit to not include any profanity (save for one use of "whore" in "Possession"). Track Listing 01. Twist of Cain 4:17 02. Not of This World 3:42 03. It was released in 1990 on Def American Recordings and was reissued in the USA and UK in 1998 by Def American's successor, American Recordings. Early pressings of the CD include a booklet that unfolds into an inverted cross. Most formats feature the original full-color "faces" album cover: these include the 12" vinyl LP, the audio cassette, and the original pressings of the European and Japanese CD. The most widely distributed format, the North American CD, features the alternate "chest/cross" album cover, a cropped black-and-white closeup of the photograph found on the back of the LP sleeve and on the interior of all formats. All CD releases feature the "faces" picture on the rear of the CD tray. Newer American Recordings pressings have a "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" label printed on the booklet artwork; previously this had been a sticker on the outer cellophane wrapping. It was reissued in 1998 by Def American's successor, American Recordings. The album's cover is a 1976 painting called "Meister und Margeritha" (Master and Margarita) by famous Swiss artist H.R. Giger. For the album cover, Giger modified the original painting slightly, covering "the Master's" erect penis with a dagger bearing his interpretation of the Danzig skull mascot. The tracks "How the Gods Kill" and "Dirty Black Summer" became popular and remain a permanent fixture in the band's set list. The album also was a departure from their previous album and showed more of a Doom metal feel to it. Nevertheless Danzig III became one of Danzig's biggest album and is considered one of their best works to date. Track Listing 01. Godless 6:51 02. Anything 4:49 03. Bodies 4:25 04. It was released in 1993 on American Recordings. The first three tracks are new studio recordings, and the last four are live versions recorded at the band's legendary 1992 Halloween performance at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in California. "Trouble" is a cover of the Elvis Presley song featured in the movie King Creole. Danzig had previously recorded the song with Samhain, which was later released on the box set version of their Final Descent EP. The E.P. was issued as a picture-disc CD and LP in Europe. From the fourth pressing on, the CD releases have a hidden track (there are several blank five second long tracks leading up to the track #93) featuring the remixed studio version of "Mother", titled "Mother '93". Thanks to the popularity of that song, both the E.P. and the band's debut album were certified gold by the RIAA in 1994. This version of the song was used in the MTV music video which featured 'Mother' as what came to be known as Danzig's most popular song Track Listing Thrall: 01. It was released in 1994 on American Recordings following 1993's highly successful Thrall: Demonsweatlive EP and singer Glenn Danzig's 1992 instrumental solo effort, Black Aria. Though it is properly titled Danzig 4p, most fans, and the band members themselves, usually refer to it simply as Danzig 4. It is notable as the band's final album on American Recordings, and as the last to feature the original lineup of John Christ (guitar), Eerie Von (bass), and Chuck Biscuits (drums). Shortly after the album had been recorded, Biscuits left the band, returned, and was finally fired. Just prior to the album's release he was replaced by Joey Castillo, who also appeared in Biscuits' place for the album's videosingles, "Cantspeak" and "I Don't Mind the Pain". Von and Christ left the band on 5 July the following year, following the tour in support of Danzig 4. The CD release contains an unlisted or "hidden" thirteenth song that is not included on the cassette and vinyl versions of the album. According to Glenn Danzig, "Invocation" is its title. After track 12, "Let It Be Captured", there are several "blank" tracks, each 4 seconds long, so that "Invocation" is actually track 66. CD Players that display the "current track number" and "total disc time elapsed" in minutes thus read 66 63:06 on the display as the final track starts. This is perhaps an uncanny coincidence or an intentional reference to The Number of the Beast and the song We Are 138 that Danzig wrote during his days in The Misfits. Track Listing 01. It was released in 1996 on Hollywood Records, and was reissued on E-Magine Records in 2000 with three extra tracks and a new album cover by Martin Emond (see below). The album is a landmark as the first Danzig album recorded after the demise of the "classic" lineup featuring John Christ, Eerie Von, and Chuck Biscuits; only the band's leader, songwriter / vocalist Glenn Danzig remained, joined by drummer Joey Castillo, who had joined the band late in 1994 after Biscuits' departure. Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) plays guitar on tracks 3, 7, and 8 (tracks 3, 8, and 9 of the reissue). Aside from the contributions of Castillo and Cantrell, Danzig himself plays nearly all the instruments on the remainder of the album. Blackacidevil was widely criticized for its apparent shift from heavy metal to industrial rock, though Danzig himself has repeatedly downplayed such assessments, noting that the album draws on much more than just industrial influences. Some fans consider the change a blatant attempt at making a commercially accessible release, while others consider it a natural progression from the style of Danzig's earlier project, Samhain. The album was not well received by fans and as of 2007 had sold 124,000 copies.[1] This may be one of the reasons why it was the only album to feature Joseph Bishara who has also done keyboards and programming for 16 Volt. It is also the first album recorded after Danzig's departure from producer Rick Rubin's record label, American Recordings. In interviews Danzig has said that Rubin discouraged the more elaborate and experimental Samhain-style elements in the music, especially on the first two Danzig albums, which Rubin produced, in favor of a more traditional "stripped-down" heavy metal / rock style in the mold of AC/DC. Besides the changes in lineup and musical direction, Blackacidevil's original release caused more controversy: Danzig's violent music and so-called Satanic imagery conflicted with the corporate image projected by Disney, the parent company of Danzig's new record label, Hollywood Records. Tower Records' Pulse Magazine created a mock radio advertisement and a cartoon drawing spoofing this odd relationship. The cartoon featured Glenn Danzig shaking hands with Disney CEO Michael Eisner at the entrance to "Danzigland" (instead of Disneyland). The two are surrounded by skulls, children wearing "666" T-shirts, a horned and fanged Mickey Mouse, etc. Perhaps not surprisingly, this was the only full-length Danzig release on the Hollywood Records label Track Listing 01. 7th House 02. It was recorded at various shows between 1992 and 2000, and released in 2001 on Glenn Danzig's Evilive Records label, distributed by Restless Records. It is the first official live album from the band, although the 1993 Thrall-Demonsweatlive EP and select CD singles have featured live tracks. It was released in 2002 on Glenn Danzig's Evilive Records label and distributed by Spitfire Records. Danzig stated that this album was the last in a series of seven numbered albums, each with its own general concept. Early press releases for the album reveal that its working title was Danzig 7: Kiss the Skull. Prior to its May 2002 release, rough mixes of ten tracks were distributed over the internet with this alternate title. The set showcases a number of previously-unreleased Danzig songs, ranging from the band's first sessions in 1987-88 until the sessions for Danzig's most recent studio album, Circle of Snakes. After years of frontman Glenn Danzig discussing plans for the album, it was finally confirmed to be under preparation in the summer of 2006. Originally scheduled for release on May 29, 2007, it was delayed twice before its official release in North America on July 10, 2007, and in Europe one week earlier. The set was made available over iTunes in June 2007. Danzig mentioned this compilation in several interviews as early 1999. Due to his touring schedule and various other projects, The Lost Tracks of Danzig was set aside for a number of years before finally being completed in 2007. Danzig has said that he does not consider these songs throwaways, but that often the case was that the songs didn't fit the theme or concept of the album. "The songs that make it onto the final album 'fit' or 'flow' together as a whole. Consequently, some tremendous Danzig songs have never been released, not because they weren't great, but because they didn't fit the overall vibe of the particular album, or for other reasons."
